In August 1949, Kinsey Sign Company received the building contract for the Mill Mountain Star. The contract called for the work to be completed by Thanksgiving Eve for a total of $28,000. Roanoke Iron and Bridgeworks built the steel structure to support the star, while Kinsey Sign created the star itself, using three star panels that hold 2,000.

Sitting high atop Mill Mountain, the Roanoke Star has been calling those far and near to Virginia's Blue Ridge region since 1949. The larger-than-life star was intended as a promotion during the holiday shopping season, and was lit up in all-white on November 23, 1949 by the town mayor.

It was constructed at the top of Mill Mountain in Roanoke, Virginia in 1949 by the local merchants association to draw publicity and trade to the city.

You can drive partway up the mountain and hike the Mill Mountain Star trail the rest of the way to the top. It's only ~3.5 mile round trip, so that seemed like a great way to ease back into things as we hadn't gone hiking in a while. There's a parking lot at the start of the Mill Mountain Star trailhead with space for 12-15 cars.

In fact, the Mill Mountain Star is the largest free-standing, human-constructed, illuminated star in the world! The nearly 90-foot-tall landmark looms large more than 1,000 feet above the city. It's constructed of over 2,000 feet of neon tubing, which requires some 17,500 watts to light up.

Wonderful hike that goes past the Mill Mountain Roanoke Star, the discovery center, along the Greenway, through the woods and around back to the parking lot. There's beautiful views of Roanoke from the overlook by the star and all the way down along the Greenway. From there you hike into the woods where there's a bit of up and down and some.
